Shopify CSV “Price can’t be blank”: what to check

If Shopify reports a missing price, inspect the exact product or variant row before editing. An empty Price is not always rejected: the current format guide describes a zero-price default.
Sources checked: 1 October 2026. Examples are synthetic field subsets, not store exports or import guarantees.
What the current local checker detects
D001 checks the syntax of non-empty Price values. It does not report an empty Price or predict this Shopify error, and no price is filled automatically.

Why this error can occur

The official error list uses “Validation failed: price can't be blank”, while the current CSV field guide describes a 0.00 default for an empty Price. Check the reported row and import context before deciding whether the cell needs a value.

Fields and rows to inspect

Inspect Price (legacy Variant Price) on the reported variant row. Distinguish an omitted column, an empty cell and a deliberate zero. Check the full option combination before choosing a replacement price.

Problem and correction examples

Record 1 is the header. These small examples isolate the issue; retain the other fields your actual import needs. Scroll the code blocks to see all columns.

Problem example
Title,URL handle,Option1 name,Option1 value,Price
Example tee,example-tee,Size,M,

Record 2 has an empty Price. The local scan produces no D001 finding for this example; Shopify decides the outcome of the actual import.

Illustrative correction
Title,URL handle,Option1 name,Option1 value,Price
Example tee,example-tee,Size,M,19.99

19.99 is only an illustrative intended price. Use the real approved amount; do not fill blanks with zero or copy another variant’s price just to remove the error.

Fix and verify a small batch

  1. 01

Keep the original file and locate the row from Shopify’s report, including the product handle and variant options.

  2. 02

Compare Price with your approved source data and a fresh export of the affected product.

  3. 03

Enter the intended numeric amount without a currency symbol. Review overwrite settings before updating an existing product.

  4. 04

Check the edited CSV locally, import one affected product with its variant rows into Shopify, and verify the resulting prices before importing the rest.

Automatic fix support

Manual correction only. Safe format fixes do not choose prices; D001 does not repair business values.

Rule definition

A price is not a non-negative dot-decimal value.

Critical

Automatic fix boundary: This rule is reported for manual review; the tool does not change its business data automatically.

Check the edited CSV locally

The CSV stays in your browser. Review detectable findings, then verify a small import in Shopify. Returning opens a fresh validator; previously selected files and results are not preserved.
