Shopify CSV “Inventory quantity is not a number”: how to fix it

Inspect the Inventory quantity cell on the reported row for text or spreadsheet errors. First confirm whether you need the product CSV or a separate inventory CSV.
Sources checked: 1 October 2026. Examples are synthetic field subsets, not store exports or import guarantees.
What the current local checker detects
The current Shopify validator does not validate Inventory quantity as a number. A clean local report does not confirm stock accuracy or acceptance; inventory quantities are never repaired automatically.

Why this error can occur

The reported quantity needs a numeric stock value rather than a word such as many. The product CSV quantity column is for single-location stores; use the inventory CSV workflow for multiple locations.

Fields and rows to inspect

Inspect Inventory quantity (legacy Variant Inventory Qty), Inventory tracker, the handle and the variant options. Quantity belongs to a variant; an incorrect value can change available stock.

Problem and correction examples

Record 1 is the header. These small examples isolate the issue; retain the other fields your actual import needs. Scroll the code blocks to see all columns.

Problem example
Title,URL handle,Option1 name,Option1 value,Inventory tracker,Inventory quantity
Example tee,example-tee,Size,M,shopify,many

Record 2 contains many in Inventory quantity. The parser accepts the CSV structure and the current scanner does not flag that value.

Illustrative correction
Title,URL handle,Option1 name,Option1 value,Inventory tracker,Inventory quantity
Example tee,example-tee,Size,M,shopify,12

12 is an illustrative confirmed count, not a suggested stock level. This example passes the supported file checks; actual inventory still needs Shopify verification.

Fix and verify a small batch

  1. 01

Keep a backup and locate the exact variant in the import report and your inventory source.

  2. 02

Confirm the store’s locations. Use the separate inventory CSV if quantities need to be assigned to multiple locations.

  3. 03

Replace text or spreadsheet errors with the verified quantity. Review tracking settings; do not replace unknown counts with zero.

  4. 04

Run the local file checks, test one affected product through the appropriate Shopify import workflow, and confirm the quantity at the intended location before continuing.

Automatic fix support

Manual correction only. The tool neither calculates stock nor changes Inventory quantity or tracking settings.

Check the edited CSV locally

The CSV stays in your browser. Review detectable findings, then verify a small import in Shopify. Returning opens a fresh validator; previously selected files and results are not preserved.
