Shopify CSV “An error occurred while trying to download the image”

Check the URL on the reported row. Shopify must retrieve the image from its own servers; a URL that opens in your logged-in browser can still fail during import.
Sources checked: 1 October 2026. Examples are synthetic field subsets, not store exports or import guarantees.
What the current local checker detects
I001 detects malformed or non-HTTP(S) image URLs. It does not request remote files or reproduce Shopify’s image download error. Passing the local check does not prove a URL is accessible.

Why this error can occur

The official message is “Validation failed: An error occurred while trying to download the image”. “Image could not be downloaded” is a summary, not that message's exact wording. Inspect missing files, inaccessible URLs and local paths, then use a public direct image URL and verify the actual Shopify result.

Fields and rows to inspect

Inspect Product image URL (legacy Image Src) or Variant image URL (legacy Variant Image). Include the handle and distinguish a product row from an image-only continuation.

Problem and correction examples

Record 1 is the header. These small examples isolate the issue; retain the other fields your actual import needs. Scroll the code blocks to see all columns.

Problem example
Title,URL handle,Product image URL
Example tee,example-tee,file:///C:/images/tee.jpg

Record 2 points to a local file. I001 flags Product image URL; Shopify cannot fetch this file from your computer.

Illustrative correction
Title,URL handle,Product image URL
Example tee,example-tee,https://burst.shopifycdn.com/photos/forest-hiker.jpg?width=1000

The HTTPS URL comes from Shopify’s public sample and passes I001 syntax checks. It is a format example, not the right image for your product or a promise of future availability.

Fix and verify a small batch

  1. 01

Keep the original file and copy the exact URL from the reported image field.

  2. 02

Open it without signing in and confirm it returns the intended image rather than a sharing page or an error.

  3. 03

If needed, upload the intended image to Shopify Files or another public host and replace the URL with its direct address.

  4. 04

Run the local syntax check, test one product and its image rows in Shopify, and inspect the imported images and report before retrying the rest.

Automatic fix support

Manual correction only. The tool does not upload images, replace URLs, change hosts or test remote availability.

Rule definition

An image URL is not absolute HTTP(S) or is an obvious local path.

Warning

Automatic fix boundary: This rule is reported for manual review; the tool does not change its business data automatically.

Check the edited CSV locally

The CSV stays in your browser. Review detectable findings, then verify a small import in Shopify. Returning opens a fresh validator; previously selected files and results are not preserved.
