Shopify CSV “Default Title already exists”: investigate the variants

The message “Validation failed: The variant 'Default Title' already exists” can point to default-variant or option data conflicts. Review the whole product group and existing store variants before changing options.
Sources checked: 1 October 2026. Examples are synthetic field subsets, not store exports or import guarantees.
What the current local checker detects
V002 detects variant fields without their Option1 dependencies. V001 checks repeated non-default option combinations. Neither rule detects an existing store conflict or repeated literal Default Title combinations.

Why this error can occur

Rows carrying variant data without matching options can leave the intended variants unclear. Shopify support recommends reviewing Option1 name and Option1 value; a product with no options has a default variant. Existing store data can also matter.

Fields and rows to inspect

Group rows by URL handle. Inspect Option1 name, Option1 value and each variant’s SKU. A repeated handle is normal for variants and images; it is not a reason to rename the product.

Problem and correction examples

Record 1 is the header. These small examples isolate the issue; retain the other fields your actual import needs. Scroll the code blocks to see all columns.

Problem example
Title,URL handle,Option1 name,Option1 value,SKU
Example tee,example-tee,,,TEE-S
,example-tee,,,TEE-M

Records 2 and 3 have SKUs but no option name or value. V002 flags the missing dependencies; this does not prove Shopify will emit the exact Default Title message.

Illustrative correction
Title,URL handle,Option1 name,Option1 value,SKU
Example tee,example-tee,Size,S,TEE-S
,example-tee,,M,TEE-M

Use Size S and M only if those are the real intended variants. A continuation row can inherit the first row’s Option1 name. The corrected subset passes the local checks, but store conflicts remain unknown.

Fix and verify a small batch

  1. 01

Keep a backup and export the affected product from Shopify to compare existing variants and their options.

  2. 02

Separate real variant rows from accidental duplicates and image-only continuations. Keep image-only rows limited to the handle and image fields.

  3. 03

Restore the true option name and values for real variants. For a product without options, keep one intended default variant; do not invent new sizes or rename handles.

  4. 04

Run the local check and test one affected product with all its relevant rows in Shopify. Verify variant IDs, options, SKUs and images before continuing.

Automatic fix support

Manual review only. The tool does not remove default variants, deduplicate business rows or rewrite options; option changes can replace variant IDs and affect connected apps.

Rule definition

Variant fields are present without the required Option1 name or value.

Critical

Automatic fix boundary: This rule is reported for manual review; the tool does not change its business data automatically.

Check the edited CSV locally

The CSV stays in your browser. Review detectable findings, then verify a small import in Shopify. Returning opens a fresh validator; previously selected files and results are not preserved.
